AKC (American Kennel Club) Alaskan Malamute Breed Standard
The standard for the breed. A lot of people are breeding very large Malamutes nowadays. Some even call them 'Giant Malamutes'.
There is a lot of controversy amongst Malamute breeders and owners on this issue. In a lot of cases, these larger dogs have a
higher incidence of medical problems and a shorter lifespan not to mention, a harder time doing what they were originally bred to
do which is to haul freight. In any case, the breed standard is what breeders should be trying to adhere to.
Alaskan Malamute Profile
This description of the Malamute breed contains some absolutely classic statements that ring so true. It is recommended reading
but I will still quote some of the passages here:
This is not a wimpy dog. The owner must not be wimpy either.
Most owners of the Alaskan Malamute admit that this dog has an attitude.
The Malamute does enjoy being a clown at times, but give him a job to do, and he will do it willingly, enthusiastically and with a dignity and grace that is a joy to watch.
It has been said that the Malamute has his own opinions about how his world should be run, and he will take over the world if allowed.
The Malamute is a master of canine improvisation.
They not only are known to be the fastest learners of all the breeds, they also forget the fastest as well.
Alaskan Malamute Medical Conditions
Every potential Malamute owner and most definitely anyone who intends to breed Malamutes should know as much as possible about potential
medical problems in this breed. If you are getting your first Malamute and speaking to breeders and they either don't know about these
conditions or believe that there is no need for concern, then it is time to speak to someone else that really cares about the future
of the breed. For example, good breeders will hip and eye test the sire and dam of any litter and will show you the results of those tests.

Alaskan Malamute HELP League
One of the many great organisations that is dedicated to the wellbeing of Malamutes. In particular, rescue cases - dogs that have been
abandoned, lost, etc. Taking in, caring for, and eventually placing abandoned dogs is a service that would not be needed if the average
human being actually used their brain before deciding to buy that cute puppy in the pet shop window. The HELP League is a Canadian
organisation.
Alaskan Malamute Protection League
The AMPL is a co-ordinating organisation for Alaskan Malamute rescue organisations across the US.
